Shortleaf pine restoration on the Domain

student members of Sewanee's prescribed fire team

Sewanee's OESS led a controlled burn last week at Piney Point as part of a larger shortleaf pine restoration project that involves the Forest Stewards Guild, the Tennessee Wildlife Federation, and Berea College. Twelve student members of Sewanee's prescribed fire team participated in the 30 acre burn which was underneath a mature shortleaf pine stand that is being overtaken by mountain laurel and shade tolerant tree species. The goal of this work is to create conditions that are conducive to the natural regeneration of the shortleaf pine. This project will continue over the next two years and is supported by the National Fish and Willdlfe Foundation.
